The Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) fulfills several functions within the UN Secretariat at UN Headquarters in New York. The PBSO has three main functions:
- Serve as the secretariat for the Peacebuilding Commission;
- Administer the Peacebuilding Fund; and
- Coordinate peacebuilding efforts within the UN system.
The PBSO is headed by the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support (ASG) and reports to the Secretary-General. The PBSO supports a number of internal and external initiatives aimed at enhancing the UN's capacity and coordination in peacebuilding. The PBSO has worked substantially on the development of web-based resources to enhance coordination and sharing best-practices in peacebuilding within the UN system. This virtual pillar in the UN's peacebuilding architecture includes the PBC website, a peacebuilding community of practice for UN staff and a public peacebuilding portal developed by the Peacebuilding Initiative.
